What was Exotic doing at Eker Olympos Regatta?

When the relationship a brand builds with sport moves from visibility to experience, things change.

The brand came into the race venue not just to show a product, but to be part of the racer’s day. For athletes who race for hours in the sun, who tire physically and who need to cool down when they come ashore, a sugar-free drink with no additives and natural ingredients struck a directly meaningful chord.

At that point the product stopped being a communication message: it became part of the experience.

Some dropped by the stand before racing, some came back at the end of the day, some tried the drink and asked where they could buy it. The brand was not only remembered; it got direct feedback and the chance to watch real consumer behaviour.

For Exotic, though, the really interesting ground opened up beyond the product experience.

Sailing is one of the rare sports that brings professionals from different sectors, corporate teams, executives, entrepreneurs and brand representatives together in the same place. At the same regatta you can reach both athletes and decision-makers and employees from a range of companies.

And through Eker Olympos Regatta, Exotic was in contact with exactly this many-layered audience.

It met racers from different companies, observed corporate teams, saw brand boats and stepped inside a community it had not reached directly before.

That kind of contact produces a different value from conventional event participation.

Because here the brand is not trying to be seen inside heavy visitor traffic. It becomes part of a shared experience. The racer meets the product at a moment of real need, and the brand gets to know its audience directly from the field rather than from a presentation or a media plan.

From a marketing point of view, this is where sailing gets interesting.

The athlete experience, the product experience and corporate reach can all come together at the same point of contact.

Exotic’s experience at Eker Olympos Regatta is a good example of why a brand’s presence in sailing should not be thought of only through a sponsorship model.

Not every brand has to sponsor a boat. Sometimes answering a real need of race day with the right product both makes a meaningful contribution for the athlete and opens a door into a new community for the brand.

In this instalment of the Why Is This Brand Here? series, we looked at Exotic.

Because sometimes the strongest brand moments are not where the biggest logo is: they happen the moment the product actually helps.
