At\u0131l and His Father\u2019s Workshop<\/h1>\n<p class=\"ru-lede\">At\u0131l first met sailing as a child, alongside his father. Years later the two of them built a 5.70-metre plywood trimaran. Ke\u00e7i was launched in 2020, and it was on that boat, largely by trial and error, that he learned to sail. In 2025 came a second boat, Alida.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<figure class=\"ru-cover\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/atil-babasi-ultra-hafif-ucak-kapak.jpg\" alt=\"At\u0131l and his father in front of the ultralight aircraft they built together\"><figcaption>At\u0131l and his father \u00b7 the ultralight aircraft they built together<\/figcaption><\/figure><div class=\"ru-body\"><div class=\"ru-wrap\"><p class=\"ru-standfirst\">A new series starts on R\u00fczgar \u00dcst\u00fc: Who Carries the Sail? The first piece features an amateur sailor who built two boats with his father and taught himself to sail.<\/p><p>At\u0131l came across sailing for the first time when he was 11 or 12. His father was taking lessons at a sailing school at the time, and at weekends they went out to sea together in the school\u2019s small boats.<\/p><p>At that age, sailing did not become a permanent part of At\u0131l\u2019s life. But building things together with his father did.<\/p><p>Over the years, father and son built single-seat gliders and ultralight aircraft. During his university years At\u0131l also worked on the production of two electric vehicles. So making a vehicle with your own hands, getting to know materials, experimenting and rebuilding when necessary was familiar ground for both of them.<\/p><h2 class=\"ru-q\">\u201cShall we build this?\u201d<\/h2><p>At the end of 2019 his father sent At\u0131l a video of a 5.70-metre plywood boat with a trimaran hull.<\/p><p>The message contained a single question:<\/p><p class=\"ru-quote\">\u201cShall we build this?\u201d<\/p><p>This time the craft they would build was not going to fly; it would move across the water.<\/p><h2 class=\"ru-q\">From the shop to the workshop: building Ke\u00e7i<\/h2><p>First they worked out a budget, then they started gathering materials. They also turned the small shop where they sold industrial kitchen equipment into a temporary workshop.<\/p><p>The boat was built using the plywood stitch-and-glue method. The panels were cut, joined with copper wire, then epoxy and fibreglass were applied. Ba\u015far Titiz, who had previously built canoes and skis with the same method, supported them through the process.<\/p><p>First the trimaran\u2019s two outer hulls were completed, then the main hull. After around three months of work, the boat was launched in October 2020.<\/p><p>It was named Goat Cruiser. At\u0131l simply calls it \u201cKe\u00e7i\u201d.<\/p><figure class=\"ru-fig\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/goat-cruiser-kiyida-pembe-yelkenler-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"The plywood Goat Cruiser trimaran on the shore with its pink sails hoisted\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption>Goat Cruiser \u00b7 plywood trimaran \u00b7 5.70 metres<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"ru-q\">He built the boat first, then started learning to sail<\/h2><p>When Ke\u00e7i was launched, At\u0131l\u2019s sailing experience was limited.<\/p><p>There was what he remembered from childhood. But after that he largely taught himself to sail: he made progress by reading, by trial and error and by solving the problems he ran into at sea.<\/p><p>Through all of this, the person closest to him was again his father.<\/p><p>At\u0131l describes his father not only as the person he built these boats with, but as his teacher and his master. What his father wanted to pass on to him at first as a hobby grew into something bigger for At\u0131l. He wanted to learn the craft properly and put sailing at the centre of his life.<\/p><p>The changes made to the boat were part of that too.<\/p><p>When the mast broke, they made a wooden one. The rudder system changed. They switched to a furling system to make hoisting and dropping the sails easier.<\/p><p>So understanding why the boat behaves the way it does, improving it and rebuilding it when needed became as much a part of At\u0131l\u2019s sailing experience as sailing it.<\/p><p>Over time, Ke\u00e7i became known around the Islands for her pink sails.<\/p><figure class=\"ru-fig\" style=\"max-width:420px;margin:34px auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/goat-cruiser-adalar-seyir.jpg\" alt=\"The Goat Cruiser trimaran sailing under its pink sails\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption>Ke\u00e7i \u00b7 sailing around the Islands<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"ru-q\">From aircraft to sailing boat<\/h2><p>Looking back, the ultralight aircraft At\u0131l and his father built earlier is an interesting part of this story.<\/p><p>On one side is a craft that creates its own airflow as it moves; on the other, a boat that moves by using the wind that is already there.<\/p><p>For At\u0131l, what does not change is the urge to build.<\/p><p>Getting to know the material, understanding a system and, in the end, producing a craft that works.<\/p><p>Only this time the wind was at the centre of the job.<\/p><h2 class=\"ru-q\">The second boat: Alida<\/h2><p>By 2025 At\u0131l wanted to build a different type of boat.<\/p><p>Ke\u00e7i had a trimaran hull and a ketch rig. For the new project he wanted to work on a single-hulled boat with a sloop rig. That is why the Argie 15 design he saw on K\u0131nal\u0131ada caught his interest.<\/p><p>The same shop was turned into a workshop again, and work began on the second boat.<\/p><p>At\u0131l says that in the earlier projects his father was more the master and he was the apprentice. On the Argie 15 he took on the larger part of the build himself.<\/p><p>In that sense Alida was not just a second boat. It was the project where the master-apprentice relationship between father and son started to change.<\/p><p>After around four months of work, the boat was finished.<\/p><p>She was named Alida.<\/p><h2 class=\"ru-q\">Boatbuilding is not separate from sailing<\/h2><p>Until last spring At\u0131l worked as an instructor at a sailing school in Kalam\u0131\u015f. During that time he sailed a range of boats and taught sailing.<\/p><p>But he says his own interest is focused above all on small boats, boatbuilding and working on boats.<\/p><p>Today he maintains Ke\u00e7i and Alida himself.
