The Hong Kong and American Express Case<\/h1>\n<p class=\"ru-lede\">SailGP, sailing&#8217;s international league, has signed American Express for its first race in Asia. The deal, which offers privileges to cardmembers, is a useful window into how the league makes its money.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n\n<figure class=\"ru-cover\" data-no-translation><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ruzgar-ustu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/sailgp-sassnitz-2026-kapak.jpg\" alt=\"France and Denmark SailGP F50s foiling at the 2026 Sassnitz event\"><figcaption>France and Denmark, Sassnitz 2026 \u00b7 Photo: Jonathan Nackstrand for SailGP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<div class=\"ru-body\" data-no-translation><div class=\"ru-wrap\">\n\n<p class=\"ru-standfirst\">SailGP is an international sailing league in which nations compete as teams. Its structure resembles Formula 1: races are held in different cities around the world through the season, and a champion is crowned at the end. All teams race identical high-tech boats. Lifted out of the water by underwater wings (foils), these boats can exceed 100 kilometres per hour. Because racing takes place very close to shore, spectators can follow it as if they were in a stadium. The league opens its 2027 season in Hong Kong. Its first race in Asia is 100 days away, and tickets go on sale next week.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"ru-q\">Earning from broadcast, or buying it<\/h2>\n<p>In professional sport, the largest revenue line is often media rights. In the Premier League, the NBA or Formula 1, television networks and digital platforms pay leagues billions of dollars for the right to show matches and races. The league produces the content and the broadcaster buys it. Clubs and teams take a significant share of their income from that pool.<\/p>\n<p>In newer leagues, money often flows the other way. Under a so-called &#8220;time-buy&#8221; model, the league pays the broadcaster for airtime. Production and advertising sales are usually the league&#8217;s job as well. In this model the league earns nothing directly from broadcast. Its return comes from the visibility the broadcast provides and the value that visibility creates for sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>SailGP has aired on CBS in the United States since 2019, and the agreement has been extended to cover the 2026 and 2027 seasons. According to TheWrap, citing a source familiar with the matter, this deal is also a time-buy, meaning SailGP pays for the airtime. Neither party has confirmed this. Audiences, meanwhile, are growing fast. In the 2025 season the average audience per event reached 18 million, and the Spain event set a record with 23 million viewers. &#8220;The Race to Abu Dhabi&#8221;, a season review programme CBS aired in November 2025, reached around 3.5 million viewers, the most-watched sailing broadcast in US history.<\/p>\n<p>How does a league that does not earn from broadcast keep growing? The answer starts with how it was founded.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ru-q\">A league that began with a billionaire&#8217;s investment<\/h2>\n<p>SailGP was founded by Oracle founder Larry Ellison and Russell Coutts, the Olympic champion from New Zealand and one of the most successful figures in America&#8217;s Cup history. The league was announced in 2018 and held its first season in 2019 with six teams and five events.<\/p>\n<p>At the start, the league had a single financial backer. According to an estimate by the French sailing newsletter Tip &amp; Shaft, Ellison spent about 50 million dollars on the first season alone. In the first two seasons all teams belonged to the league, which covered their costs. Teams were expected to find their own sponsors, yet at the time none had signed partners beyond supplier deals.<\/p>\n<p>Having every team race the same boat was also an economic decision. No team can build a faster boat by spending more, and the league runs technology development centrally. As with the budget cap Formula 1 introduced in 2021, keeping costs under control makes teams attractive to investors.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ru-q\">The first big leap: selling the teams<\/h2>\n<p>The step that changed the league&#8217;s trajectory was selling teams to investors. In the first sales, teams changed hands for between 5 and 10 million dollars. Two major deals came in 2023: investors led by Mark Lasry bought the US team for more than 35 million dollars, and a minority investment in the Great Britain team valued it at about 40 million dollars. The Italian team joined the league at a 45 million dollar valuation. In February 2026, American Magic bought the Denmark team for 60 million dollars. Values are expected to approach 75 million dollars in the next sales.<\/p>\n<p>Thirteen teams race today, and the league has capped the field at 20. Sweden, which joined this season, arrived with no league funding, entirely on its own resources. The burden Ellison once carried alone is now shared among team owners and sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>The figures need careful reading. SailGP reported more than 200 million dollars in revenue for 2025, an increase of about 68 percent on the previous year. Part of that revenue, however, comes from team sales, which do not recur every year. The league has not published a profit figure. Coutts once described the path to profitability as a title sponsor for the whole league plus team sales. Today the league is called the Rolex SailGP Championship, and most teams are privately owned.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ru-q\">Title sponsorship and ownership<\/h2>\n<p>Two different kinds of investment sit side by side in SailGP, and they are often confused.<\/p>\n<p><b>Ownership<\/b> means buying the team itself. The owner acquires a lasting asset. The team&#8217;s sponsorship income, hospitality rights and, above all, its rise in value belong to the owner. Values climbing from 5 to 10 million dollars to 60 million show how quickly this asset has appreciated.<\/p>\n<p><b>Title sponsorship<\/b> means a brand renting the name of an event or competition for a set period. The brand does not own the asset. It pays to be associated with the event&#8217;s name, for visibility, and for privileges it can offer its own customers. In SailGP this works on two levels: the whole league carries Rolex&#8217;s name, and individual events are open to their own title sponsors. In Hong Kong, American Express has taken that right.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ru-q\">How are host cities chosen?<\/h2>\n<p>SailGP selects its host cities through a bidding process. Cities first submit an expression of interest, then a detailed proposal. The host city pays the league a cash hosting fee and adds services and infrastructure: a harbour for the racecourse, an event village, permits. In return, the city&#8217;s name appears in the event title, it gains visibility in broadcasts and it receives local sponsorship rights. Event delivery, broadcast production and logistics remain with SailGP.<\/p>\n<p>Fees are usually not disclosed, but one example made public under freedom of information laws gives a sense of scale. Christchurch in New Zealand took over an event in 2024 with four months&#8217; notice. The city&#8217;s total cost was about 1 million New Zealand dollars, of which 400,000 was the hosting fee paid to the league. The roughly 6,000 visitors who came for the race spent 3.3 million New Zealand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Dubai is one of the places where the model works best. The first Dubai Sail Grand Prix was held at Mina Rashid in November 2022. Dubai Sports Council and Dubai&#8217;s Department of Economy and Tourism were among the partners, with P&amp;O Marinas, a DP World company, on the harbour side. Today the race is called the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix. A city, an airline and a port operator meet at one event, and each serves its own goal: the city its tourism, Emirates its brand, DP World its ports. This year&#8217;s Dubai event takes place on 21-22 November.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ru-q\">Why Hong Kong?<\/h2>\n<p>SailGP opens its 2027 season on 23-24 January on Victoria Harbour, in front of Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. Coutts sees the harbour as ideal for the league&#8217;s close-to-shore racing format and calls China a long-term strategic growth opportunity. The city&#8217;s economic picture supports the choice.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tourism.<\/b> Hong Kong welcomed 49.9 million visitors in 2025, up 12 percent on the previous year. In the first half of 2026, arrivals rose 13 percent to 26.7 million. Visitor spending grew 13 percent in 2025 to 217.5 billion Hong Kong dollars.<\/p>\n<p><b>A mega events strategy.<\/b> The Hong Kong government uses major events as an economic tool. Over the past three years, 95 events received about 1.1 billion Hong Kong dollars in support through the &#8220;M&#8221; Mark system and an arts and culture fund. By linking event tickets to restaurant, retail and transport discounts, the government aims to keep visitors in the city longer and spending more. SailGP has also been granted &#8220;M&#8221; Mark status. According to an editorial in the South China Morning Post, this status allows for up to 15 million Hong Kong dollars in support. The city has signed a one-year, extendable contract with the league.<\/p>\n<p><b>Wealth.<\/b> According to Boston Consulting Group&#8217;s Global Wealth Report 2026, Hong Kong has overtaken Switzerland to become the world&#8217;s largest cross-border wealth management centre. More than 3,380 single family offices were operating in the city at the end of 2025. The high-spending audience SailGP targets is found in Asia at its densest here.<\/p>\n<p>The SCMP editorial also describes Hong Kong&#8217;s selection as an important win for the city and expects the race to bring substantial economic benefit. What matters now, the paper argues, is that the first edition runs smoothly.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ru-q\">American Express and its cardmembers<\/h2>\n<p>American Express is a financial services company that issues its own cards and runs its own payment network. What sets it apart from Visa and Mastercard is its direct relationship with cardmembers and the large share of revenue it earns from annual card fees.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s 2025 figures show this model clearly. Revenue grew 10 percent to 72.2 billion dollars. There are 86.6 million Amex cards in use worldwide, and spending on these cards reached 1.67 trillion dollars. Annual card fee revenue passed 10 billion dollars for the first time. More than 70 percent of newly opened accounts were on fee-paying cards.<\/p>\n<p>The profile of the customer base is also shifting. According to Amex, about 65 percent of new consumer accounts in 2025 came from Millennials and Gen Z. These generations are growing their spending faster than other age groups: in the first quarter of 2025, card spending by Millennials and Gen Z rose 14 percent, against 5 percent for Gen X. Spending outside the United States grew 13 percent.<\/p>\n<p>This explains why Amex invests in event sponsorship. A customer who pays an annual fee wants something in return that money alone cannot easily buy. For young, high-income cardmembers, that return is often an experience: priority tickets, exclusive areas, race-day privileges. In Hong Kong, SailGP gives Amex the chance to offer that experience in one of Asia&#8217;s wealthiest cities.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ru-q\">What does the Hong Kong deal offer cardmembers?<\/h2>\n<p>The agreement gives cardmembers two concrete privileges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Priority tickets:<\/b> Amex cardmembers can buy tickets on 21-22 October 2026. Sales for SailGP+ members open on 23-26 October, and general sale begins on 27 October.<\/li>\n<li><b>Discounts:<\/b> Cardmembers receive special discounts on ticket prices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Grandstand tickets cost 700 Hong Kong dollars for a single day and 1,120 for the weekend. The VELA Priv\u00e9 corporate hospitality package is sold through a separate channel. Walter Liu, Head of the Asia Region at American Express, describes the deal as part of a strategy to make cardmembership more rewarding.<\/p>\n<p>The deal creates tangible value for both sides. American Express offers its high-income cardmembers in Hong Kong an experience that cannot easily be bought. SailGP, in turn, reaches a ready-made audience with strong purchasing power for its first race in a new market.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ru-q\">The marketing strategies behind it<\/h2>\n<p><b>The experience economy.<\/b> In a 1998 Harvard Business Review article, Joseph Pine and James Gilmore argued that economic value was shifting from goods and services to memorable experiences. What SailGP sells is a weekend experience: boats flying at 100 kilometres per hour, watched from the shore in some of the world&#8217;s most striking harbours.<\/p>\n<p><b>Access sponsorship.<\/b> For years American Express has offered cardmembers presales and exclusive areas at concerts and major sporting events. In this model, the sponsor&#8217;s investment goes more into the privilege it offers its customers than into logo visibility. Success is measured by card usage and customer loyalty.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tribe thinking.<\/b> In his 2008 book <i>Tribes<\/i>, Seth Godin argued that a clearly defined community gathered around a shared interest can be more valuable than a large but scattered audience. SailGP, too, chooses to go deeper with a high-spending, clearly profiled audience rather than chasing rapid audience growth. Partners such as Rolex, Emirates and DP World are in the league to reach that audience.<\/p>\n<p><b>Hospitality and business relationships.<\/b> The return on team ownership is not limited to the team&#8217;s revenue. According to an investor comment relayed on the Business of Sport podcast, deals worth eight to nine figures can be done over a single race weekend by hosting clients. It could be called the maritime version of the tradition of doing business on the golf course.<\/p>\n<p><b>Celebrity investors.<\/b> Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have invested in the Australian team, Kylian Mbapp\u00e9 in the French team and Sebastian Vettel in the German team. As Reynolds&#8217; experience at Wrexham shows, celebrity partners make it easier for a league to reach audiences beyond its own sport.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ru-q\">When does media become a sponsor?<\/h2>\n<p>Media sponsorship for races is a frequent topic of discussion in T\u00fcrkiye. Media organisations rarely pay cash. What they offer is airtime, pages or content production, and in return they want to bring something to their own readers or viewers. The examples point to four different situations.<\/p>\n<p><b>When the event is the media organisation&#8217;s own product.<\/b> Newspapers often founded races to raise circulation. The Tour de France was organised by the sports paper L&#8217;Auto in 1903, and the Giro d&#8217;Italia by La Gazzetta dello Sport in 1909. In sailing, the best-known example is La Solitaire du Figaro. The race began in 1970 under the name of the newspaper L&#8217;Aurore; in 1980 Le Figaro bought it and gave it its own name. Spi Ouest-France, the regatta that opens the French season, also carries the name of the regional newspaper Ouest-France. The magazine sent its own digital team to the event and produced a large digital special on what happens behind the scenes and on the leading names in each class. In return it gained visibility at the venue and exclusive content for its readers. The organisers, for their part, found a direct route to their target audience.<\/p>\n<p><b>When the event&#8217;s audience overlaps with the outlet&#8217;s readers.<\/b> In 2005 Yachting World became the official media partner and a platinum sponsor of Antigua Sailing Week, putting up a trophy in its own name for one of the races. The magazine&#8217;s readers and the event&#8217;s competitors are largely the same people.<\/p>\n<p><b>Barter deals.<\/b> This is the most common model. The media organisation provides advertising space or airtime and receives a logo, naming rights and access to content in return. SailGP&#8217;s time-buy relationship with CBS works the other way around: a league not yet big enough for the broadcaster buys the airtime itself.<\/p>\n<p><b>Why don&#8217;t they sponsor every race?<\/b> What a media organisation sells is advertising space and the audience&#8217;s attention. Every page or minute of airtime it gives to a race is space it could otherwise sell. A race whose audience consists only of its competitors, that has no story to tell, that produces no photos or video, or that publishes results days later, remains a cost for the media. News organisations also face an independence problem: covering an event they sponsor as news can undermine readers&#8217; trust.<\/p>\n<p><b>What do they expect in return?<\/b> First, exclusive content: access to results, photos and interviews before anyone else. Then ready-to-publish material, meaning the photos, video and stories the event produces. An audience that overlaps with their own readers, and the chance to win new readers, subscribers or newsletter sign-ups from it. Visibility at the venue and in the event&#8217;s communications. Finally, a commercial opportunity: a media partner can sell its own advertising packages to the event&#8217;s other sponsors. For some organisations, that is the real gain.<\/p>\n<p>In short, media becomes a sponsor when it can bring something to its readers or viewers: exclusive content, new readers, visibility on the ground or an event carrying its own name. What a sailing team should offer a media sponsor is these, more than a logo spot: regular content, behind-the-scenes access and an audience that matches the outlet&#8217;s readership.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ru-q\">Open questions<\/h2>\n<p>The model works for now, but some questions remain open. Will broadcasters one day compete for the rights, or will the league keep buying airtime? Once team sales run out, can the league sustain its revenue through sponsorship and host cities? Will new viewers with no connection to sailing stay?<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong will be the first test of these questions in Asia.
