The story of the America’s Cup from the beginning

In 1851 a single race around an English island gave rise to the oldest international competition in sport still being contested. For this trophy yachts went to war, clubs went to court, a tea merchant lost for thirty years and a country put on red socks. The 38th America’s Cup will be sailed in Naples in July 2027. We tell the story from the very beginning, as simply as we can.

America’s Cup 1983, Newport · Australia II prize-giving

There is no second, Your Majesty

The story begins in the summer of 1851 with a yacht sailing from New York to England. A group of New York Yacht Club members led by John Cox Stevens, the club’s founding commodore, had a yacht built for the trip. They had two aims: to show the world what American boatbuilding could do and to win money racing. The yacht was called America and had cost 30,000 dollars.

America’s designer, George Steers, had designed pilot boats for New York harbour. Those boats had to go to sea in any weather, which made them strong, and they raced each other to reach incoming ships first, which made them fast. Her skipper, Richard Brown, was one of the Sandy Hook pilots known for handling boats in the shallows of New York harbour.

British yachting watched America closely, perhaps with some concern. After an informal encounter shortly after her arrival, no British yacht was willing to take her on. In the end the Royal Yacht Squadron opened the 53-mile race around the Isle of Wight on the last day of its annual regatta to all nations and announced that no time allowance would be applied.

On the morning of 22 August 1851 America started badly. Her anchor fouled and she fell behind the fleet. Within half an hour she had climbed to fifth. On the shoals to the east of the island, boats traditionally passed the lightship on its seaward side. America’s local pilot chose the landward side instead. A rival protested, but the protest was dismissed because the sailing instructions did not say on which side the lightship had to be passed.

The move put America in front, and she finished 18 minutes ahead of her nearest rival. According to legend, Queen Victoria, who was watching, asked who was second and received the answer that went down in history: "There is no second, Your Majesty."

The trophy was first called the "R.Y.S. £100 Cup". It took its present name from the yacht that won it that day.

One trophy, two boats and one rule

Today the America’s Cup is the oldest international sporting competition still being contested. The Match is sailed one on one between two boats. On one side is the boat of the club holding the Cup, the defender. On the other is the boat of the club trying to win it, the challenger. The winner takes the trophy known in sailing as the "Auld Mug". There is no fixed calendar. The two clubs set the dates, and the event is usually held every three or four years.

The Cup’s most important rule is very simple. The trophy is won by clubs, not by sailors or boat owners. It belongs to the club that won the most recent Match.

A deed of gift kept the Cup alive

In 1857 America’s surviving owners donated the Cup to the New York Yacht Club through a deed of gift filed with the New York Supreme Court. Known as the Deed of Gift, the document still sets out who may challenge for the Cup, how, and how the races are to be sailed. Its core rests on a single condition: the Cup must be preserved as a perpetual challenge trophy for friendly competition between nations.

Some of its rules have not changed in 170 years. The challenging club must come from a different country from the defending club and must hold regular annual regattas on the sea. The yachts must be propelled by sail alone and built in the club’s own country.

New York: a club founded by nine men

The New York Yacht Club was founded by nine men on 30 July 1844, and John Cox Stevens was elected its first commodore. Its bond with the sea began on the first day. On the day of the founding, the members decided to sail from the tip of Manhattan to Newport, and they set off two days later.

The club’s present home is also the product of generosity. In 1898 former commodore J. P. Morgan offered to buy a plot on 44th Street in Manhattan. His only condition was that annual dues rise from 25 to 50 dollars. The board accepted, and the next day Morgan bought the plots for 148,000 dollars and gave them to the club. At the heart of the building is the Model Room, where models of every America’s Cup defender are displayed.

America’s own story took a very different turn after her victory. During the American Civil War she was sold to the Confederacy as a blockade runner, scuttled in Florida in 1862, then raised and repaired by Union forces. She later became a training ship at the Naval Academy. In 1942 the shed where she was stored collapsed in a heavy snowstorm. Her remains were broken up and burned in 1945. The club kept her stern eagle, her tiller and one of her masts. That mast now stands as a flagpole at the club’s summer station in Newport.

Cowes: a royal club founded in a tavern

The club that first lost the Cup has an even older story. The Royal Yacht Squadron was founded as "The Yacht Club" on 1 June 1815 at the Thatched House Tavern in London by 42 gentlemen with an interest in sailing at sea. Membership was limited to owners of yachts of at least 10 tons. In 1833 King William IV gave the club the name Royal Yacht Squadron.

The club’s home is Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight. Its yachts have the privilege of flying the White Ensign of the Royal Navy. The Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott was a member. On his last expedition he registered his ship Terra Nova as a club yacht so that he could apply naval discipline on board.

For a long time the club’s doors stayed closed. Members only granted women full membership in August 2013.

This is also where the story comes full circle. In 2027 the Royal Yacht Squadron is again the Cup’s Challenger of Record, the lead challenger. The club that first put up the trophy 175 years ago is represented this time by GB1, led by Sir Ben Ainslie.

The tea merchant who lost for thirty years

The Cup’s best-loved loser was a tea merchant. Thomas Lipton was born in Glasgow in 1848 to an Irish family that had fled the Great Famine. At 15 he worked as a cabin boy, used his savings to go to America and, after returning, opened his first grocery shop in Glasgow in 1871. Over time he bought tea plantations and built a worldwide brand.

Between 1899 and 1930 Lipton challenged for the Cup five times with yachts named Shamrock and lost all five. His persistence was driven as much by a wish for publicity as by a love of sailing, and the results bore that out. His much-discussed pursuit of the Cup made his tea famous in America.

The story has a sad detail. Lipton, a self-made man, was not born into the British aristocracy. The exclusive Royal Yacht Squadron admitted him as a member only shortly before his death.

Americans had embraced him long before. After his fifth defeat, thousands joined a campaign launched in the middle of the Great Depression. Among the donors were a future president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and miners from Utah who sent 25 kilograms of silver for the trophy’s base. The solid gold cup, made by Tiffany, was decorated with shamrocks. Lipton died in 1931, eight months after receiving it.

132 years, a bolted-down trophy and a secret keel

The New York Yacht Club held the Cup from 1857 to 1983 and defended it 24 times in a row. Together with the 1851 victory, this 132-year run is the longest winning streak in sporting history.

The club was so confident that it had bolted the trophy to a plinth in its trophy room. In the 1970s the Australian businessman Alan Bond set out to unbolt it, together with the self-taught designer Ben Lexcen.

Lexcen’s answer was a "winged" keel no one had seen before. The design made Australia II both faster and more manoeuvrable. The Australians took extraordinary measures to hide the keel from the world, and from the Americans in particular. When the boat was moved, the keel was covered with tarpaulins, and armed guards were posted day and night. The Americans first tried to buy the design from the test centre in the Netherlands where it had been developed. When that failed, they claimed several times that the keel broke the rules. Those protests were dismissed as well.

The Match started badly. Liberty, helmed by Dennis Conner, comfortably beat Australia II, which suffered gear failures, in the first two races. As the series went on, however, the secret keel began to rattle the Americans, and in 1983 Australia II, sailing for the Royal Perth Yacht Club, ended the 132-year streak.

After the win Bond had the boat lifted out of the water and showed the keel to everyone. Newport harbour was so crowded that, in the words of the team’s helmsman John Bertrand, you could have walked across it. People jumped into the water to touch the keel. One of them was even wearing a dinner jacket.

New Zealand’s red socks

In 1995 the Cup went to New Zealand, and the symbol of that victory was a pair of socks. Peter Blake’s wife, Pippa, gave him a pair of socks for luck on every sailing campaign. For the 1995 campaign in San Diego the socks were red, and Blake wore them every time the New Zealand boat Black Magic went out. One day an injury kept him off the boat. There were no red socks on board, and New Zealand suffered its only defeat of the entire campaign that day.

The socks quickly became a national passion. Sponsors had tens of thousands of pairs made before the final, and they sold out in New Zealand within days. In total 100,000 pairs were sold, with half of the proceeds going to the team, a clever piece of fundraising for a campaign on a tight budget. When the team came home, hundreds of thousands of people filled the streets of Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.

In 2000 Blake successfully defended the Cup, and New Zealand became the first team from outside the United States to defend it successfully. The end of his story is tragic. Blake, who had left racing to work on environmental causes, was killed by pirates on the Amazon on 5 December 2001. This time the red socks were worn in mourning.

The lakeside club that took the Cup to Europe

The Cup’s first journey to Europe began in a country without a coastline. Founded in 1872, the Société Nautique de Genève is a club on the shores of Lake Geneva, known for the high-performance catamarans developed specifically for the lake.

The Swiss biotechnology entrepreneur Ernesto Bertarelli founded the Alinghi racing team in 2000. The team took its name from the boats the Bertarelli family raced off the Italian coast. Representing the club, Alinghi beat Team New Zealand in Auckland in 2003. It was the first time a team had won the Cup at its first attempt, and the first time the Cup went to Europe.

A familiar name stood behind that win. Russell Coutts, the helmsman who had won the Cup for New Zealand in 1995 and 2000, faced New Zealand in 2003 as part of Alinghi. The most successful helmsman in America’s Cup history, Coutts won 14 out of 14 races at the helm across three Matches.

A Cup that began in court and ended in two races

After its 2007 defence, Alinghi named a newly formed Spanish club as the official challenger. The club had no clubhouse and no boat and had never held a regatta. Larry Ellison’s BMW Oracle Racing, on behalf of the Golden Gate Yacht Club, challenged the arrangement in a New York court and won.

When the parties failed to agree, the 2010 Match was sailed between the two clubs alone under the most basic rules of the Deed of Gift. With so few rules, both sides pushed design to its limits. Alinghi arrived with a giant catamaran, Oracle with a giant trimaran. Despite the long dispute, the contest on the water was short. USA 17, with its rigid wing sail, was much faster, and the series ended after two races. Leading the Oracle team was Russell Coutts, formerly Bertarelli’s right-hand man.

The courtroom was not a new stop in the Cup’s history. In 1988 New Zealand’s Mercury Bay Boating Club challenged with a giant monohull, and the San Diego Yacht Club answered with a catamaran. The New York Court of Appeals ruled that, as long as the Deed’s rules were respected, the defending club could use a different type of boat from the challenger.

Oracle’s second big moment came in San Francisco in 2013. Penalised for a rules breach, the team started the Match two races behind and won the series 9–8. It is remembered as one of the most remarkable comebacks in the Cup’s history.

Defender and challenger: how the system works today

From the first defence in 1870 until 1967, a single club challenged for the Cup each time. When more than one club entered in 1970, an elimination series was held to select the official challenger, and that approach has continued ever since.

Today it works like this. The defending club accepts one of the challengers as the "Challenger of Record". That club sets the rules together with the defender and organises the challenger series, in which clubs from other countries also take part. The winner of the series takes a trophy that was called the Louis Vuitton Cup from 1983 to 2017 and again from 2024, and meets the defender in the Match.

In 2027 the Cup is defended by Emirates Team New Zealand, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. According to the official press kit of June 2026 there are six challengers: GB1 from Great Britain as Challenger of Record, Luna Rossa from Italy, Tudor Team Alinghi from Switzerland, La Roche-Posay Racing Team from France, Team Australia from Australia and American Racing Challenger Team USA from the United States.

The boat is racing too

In the America’s Cup every team designs and builds its own boat. The competition therefore tests boat and sail design, fundraising and management as well as sailing skill.

That freedom has its limits. Some parts, such as the mast, the rigging, the foil arms and the hydraulics that move them, are the same for everyone. Elsewhere teams are free. In 2027 no new boats are being built, to keep costs under control. Teams are reusing the AC75 hulls that raced in 2024 with limited modifications, and spending is overseen through a cap of 75 million euros. Getting the most out of the existing boat is therefore what matters most.

This is where the Formula 1 comparison makes sense. In both sports, teams build different machines within the same rules, and the race starts in the design office before it reaches the track.

Formula 1 engineers in the boatyard

The similarity goes well beyond a metaphor. The British team’s partnership with Mercedes F1 was built through INEOS, co-owner of both teams. The sailing team has offices at the Mercedes base in Brackley, and hundreds of Mercedes staff worked on the sailing project. James Allison was technical director of both teams.

Carbon fibre composites, structural analysis, hydraulics and control systems, electronics, data analysis, hydrodynamics and aerodynamics: the two sports overlap across a wide area. When Alinghi returned to the Cup, it joined forces with the reigning Formula 1 world champion, Red Bull Racing, and raced as Alinghi Red Bull Racing. According to the Mercedes engineer Thomas Batch, the two jobs are very similar.

A 23-metre monohull that flies above the water

Today’s America’s Cup boat is the AC75. The 75 in its name is its overall length in feet. The boat is around 23 metres long and 5 metres wide, with a hull length of 20.7 metres. It is a monohull, but once the wind reaches around six knots it rises onto its foils and starts flying above the water.

On each side of the boat is an arm carrying a T-shaped foil at its tip. These foils, about the size of an ironing board, can lift a seven-tonne boat out of the water. There is no conventional keel. The moving foils on either side provide both stability and lift. The boats fly at speeds of around 50 knots, and the record measured in racing is 55.6 knots, more than 100 kilometres an hour.

For a long time the Cup boats resembled the racing yachts we see in Türkiye. The 12 Metre class yachts raced between 1958 and 1987 sailed with their hulls in the water and a heavy lead keel underneath. Australia II, which won the Cup in 1983, was 19.2 metres long and weighed around 22 tonnes. The IACC boats used between 1992 and 2007 grew to 25 metres. On these boats the keel alone weighed 19 tonnes, and the crew numbered 17.

The yachts we see in club racing in Türkiye work on the same principle. The hull moves through the water, the keel keeps the boat upright and the waterline length of the hull limits its speed. That is why these boats mostly race at single-digit speeds in knots. On an AC75 the hull barely touches the water during a race. The lift of the foils, rather than the weight of a keel, balances the boat, and it can reach several times the speed of the wind. This change gathered pace after 2010. In 2013 wing-sailed catamarans began flying on foils, and in 2021 flying monohulls arrived.

From muscle to batteries

The number of people on board has been debated in every era. Under the 2024 rules the crew was cut from 11 to eight to save weight. The same rules brought back the "cyclors", who pedal to generate power for the hydraulic system, an idea Emirates Team New Zealand had introduced in 2017.

A bigger change is coming in 2027. According to the official press kit, all of the AC75s’ power needs are met by batteries. The batteries provide power equivalent to that of four cyclors, and no manual power is allowed except for steering. The crew drops to five, and at least one must be a woman. There is also a seat for a guest racer. The nationality rule has been tightened too. The female sailor and at least two other crew members must be nationals of the team’s country, which means no more than two sailors from other countries can be on board.

The price of the Cup

The Cup’s prestige brings together the world’s best sailors, designers, wealthy entrepreneurs and sponsors. That comes at a price. The budget of a modern America’s Cup team can exceed 100 million dollars. The 2013 winner is estimated to have spent around 300 million dollars on the event.

For the host city the picture is bigger still. According to a report by the University of Barcelona and the Barcelona Capital Nàutica Foundation, the 37th America’s Cup in 2024 generated an economic impact of 1.034 billion euros for Barcelona and Catalonia. Over 59 days, 1.8 million visitors were counted in the free event areas, 460,819 of whom came to the city specifically for the event. The event created an impact equivalent to 12,872 jobs and generated 208.5 million euros in tax revenue. The 244 superyachts that berthed in the port alone left 35 million euros of spending in the local economy.

There is another side to the picture. The Port of Barcelona reportedly spent 4.5 million euros between 2022 and 2024 and recorded a loss of 3.5 million euros. In 2027 the Cup moves to Naples.

The sectors behind the Cup

The America’s Cup sponsor list also shows which audience the Cup speaks to. The title partner of the 38th America’s Cup is Louis Vuitton, the luxury fashion and leather goods house whose link with the Cup began with the Louis Vuitton Cup in 1983. The event’s official timekeeper is the Swiss watchmaker Omega.

On the team side the picture is more varied. The defender’s naming sponsor is the airline Emirates, which has backed the team for more than twenty years and has renewed the agreement for the fifth time. The Swiss team carries the name of the watch brand Tudor, and the French team that of La Roche-Posay, the skincare brand owned by the L’Oréal Group.

The main sponsor of the Italian team Luna Rossa is the fashion house Prada, while the tyre maker Pirelli is the team’s official sponsor and technology partner. The team’s partners also include the car brand Alfa Romeo, the insurance group Unipol, the watch brand Panerai, the pasta maker Pasta Garofalo and the telecommunications company Fastweb. Fastweb is setting up dedicated 5G coverage for the team in the Gulf of Cagliari and the Gulf of Naples to transmit boat data and video in real time.

On the British team the name that stands out is an investor rather than a sponsor. The investment firm Oakley Capital has taken a majority stake in GB1.

The list comes down to a handful of sectors: luxury fashion and watches, aviation, cosmetics, automotive, insurance, food and telecommunications. Some of these brands use the event to reach an international, high-income audience. Others use it to test their technology in real racing conditions.

Two boats, one on one, in Türkiye

The final of the America’s Cup is sailed in a format known in sailing as "match racing". Two boats race at the same time, and the one that beats its opponent wins. The format has a short history in Türkiye, but it has grown quickly in recent years.

Marmaris. Datça Yat Spor Kulübü and Marmaris Uluslararası Yat Kulübü held the Türkiye leg of the European Match Race Tour in Marmaris for the first time on 25–28 September 2025. Eight teams and 38 sailors from Spain, the United Kingdom, Poland, Sweden, Greece and Türkiye raced at Albatros Marina. The 11 Metre One Design (11MOD) class was introduced to Türkiye for the first time at this event. The races were run by German and Italian umpires. The Marmaris leg of the series was on the calendar again in 2026, and on 15–16 October 2026 the Türkiye Match Race championship will be sailed at the same marina with the same fleet.

Moda. The J70 Match Race, part of the TAYK–Eker Olympos Regatta organised by Türkiye Açıkdeniz Yarış Kulübü (TAYK), the Turkish Sailing Federation and Eker Süt Ürünleri, was held in Türkiye for the third time in 2026. Hosted by Moda Deniz Kulübü on 11–12 August, six teams completed 29 races over two days. The races were streamed live on YouTube and X, with live commentary explaining the tactical moves on the course.

These events share the same language as the America’s Cup: position on the start line, moves to block the opponent and turns where the two boats come within metres of each other.

Racing you can watch from the shore on the Bosphorus

The race that gave birth to the America’s Cup was watched from the shore by thousands of people, the Queen among them. In Istanbul, too, you can watch sailing races from the shore. The narrow waterway between two continents is one of the few racing areas with a course this close to land, and different clubs hold races here every year.

According to the Turkish Sailing Federation’s 2026 programme, three races remain on the Bosphorus this year. Türkiye Açıkdeniz Yarış Kulübü (TAYK) holds the ninth leg of the TAYK Trophy on 3 October as the Bülent Atabay Kupası, named after Bülent Atabay, who has launched six racing yachts called Orient Express since 1980. Marmara Yelken Spor Kulübü holds the MASS Kardeşlik Kupası on 24 October. The Cumhuriyet Kupası stage of the 7th Presidential International Yacht Races will be sailed on the Bosphorus and surrounding waters from 29 October to 1 November.

You can find every race in Istanbul and along the rest of Türkiye’s coast in our race calendar.

The road to Naples

The journey to the 38th America’s Cup has already begun. The first preliminary regatta was held in Cagliari, Sardinia, in May 2026 and the second in Naples on 24–27 September 2026. These races are sailed in AC40s, the AC75’s smaller sibling, and teams can also race with women’s and youth crews alongside their main line-up.

The challenger series runs from 22 May to 4 July 2027. The Match starts on 10 July and ends on the weekend of 17–18 July. For the first time in its 175-year history, the America’s Cup will be sailed in Italy.

The easiest way to follow the racing is through the official YouTube and Facebook channels. In 2024 the live coverage and highlights reached 239 territories through these channels, and official broadcasters covered 209 territories.

Sources
<a
